Here is Alexi during sound check before the first gig we played after the release of our ‘Suicide By My Side’ album. Listen to how great that verse from ‘I Spit on Your Grave’ sounds without vocals! I joked with Alexi and Roope on multiple occasions, telling them I felt at least half the songs on this album should’ve been instrumental because I felt guilty singing over their amazing guitar work. Any other singers experience a dilemma like this? “How the hell do I write a vocal melody over this killer riff?” To celebrate our albums being re-released on all streaming platforms, I wanted to share details about some of the songs. The music for this track was written in equal parts by myself and Alexi. I wrote the opening riff and chorus, then he followed those up with some killer verses and transitional riffs. I wrote all lyrics for Sinergy, but the title for this one came long before the band ever started… As a child of the 80’s, one of my favorite past times was going to the video store on weekends with friends looking through the horror section and renting scary movies for our impending sleepover. One movie title that always stood out to me was that of a film called ‘I Spit on Your Grave’. The movie itself is HORRIBLE, I do NOT recommend it to anyone! It’s immensely disturbing and certain scenes can’t be unseen 🤢. However, the premise of the movie was something I knew I wanted to write about one day. A woman enacting revenge on her attackers/abusers/tormentors. And let’s be real, the title is just cool as fuck 😉. So I went ahead and wrote these lyrics relating back to my own childhood traumas. I’ve said it before, music is my therapy. I wish all people could channel their pain/rage/anguish/depression through some form of artistic expression. The world might be a kinder place if we all released these emotions through art rather than hurting each other. Just my 2 cents ✌️ Now let’s talk about that intro. Alexi had a smoker’s cough and would often spit. His spitting was just another background noise that occasionally resonated throughout the day. The minute we started writing this song I knew EXACTLY how I wanted it to begin! #sinergy #songwriting #alexilaiho
