A year gone now to the day. I’ll be remembering Nick tonight on the beach in the customary manner. Light a fire. Always on the beach, our best times on the beach. There’ll be the usual oft-repeated tales of the spliffless skin-divers of our teenage Spanish paradise El Portet, the sharp-edged fuckwits of Babylon, Bloxham, London and Bangkok will make their greasy appearance, Mrs G will be mentioned in a school dinner hall dance hall tennis ball quip. The blimbpots, the sploricks, the Sunday night sidewinders, the flappy faces, even the Cointreau sex god grandad are all now part of our dead language. Tonight I’ll give them to the sea.
