During Day-1 of Cairo Freedivers competition I received a red card after my STA attempt because of a failed surface protocol. in freediving, surfacing isn’t the end of the dive it’s one of the most critical moments. after a long breath hold, the body is still under hypoxic stress. that’s why the surface protocol has to be done in the correct order and with full control: 1- remove facial equipment 2- clear “I’m OK” signal FACING THE JUDGES 3- saying “I’m OK” FACING THE JUDGES the protocol exists to confirm that the diver is conscious, stable, and fully in control after the attempt. if you miss the sequence, lose control, or delay the response too much, the attempt can be invalidated for safety reasons. that’s why practicing the correct surface protocol after every training dive is critical under hypoxia, muscle memory becomes extremely important and can be the difference between a white card and a disqualification. where do you think i went wrong with the protocol?
