This Religious News Service photograph was snapped during the 1951 “Battle Night Services” held at the Old North Church in Boston, where, every year on April 18, they hold traditional services in commemoration of Paul Revere’s famous 1775 ride. Prior to the service, signal lanterns are hung in the 175-foot tower of the church. Walking down the aisle on his way to the tower with two lanterns held aloft is Henry D. Chapin, who the caption says is “a direct descendent of the Revolutionary hero.” The Old North Church was built in 1723 with cement and brick brought over from England, making it the second oldest building in Boston. “The steeple, which is mentioned in all American history books, is now covered with the names of visitors from all over the world,” shares the caption. The chandelier hanging above Chapin’s head was taken from a French vessel by the privateer “Queen of Hungary” and presented to the church in 1746.
