"When it first started dad was telling us he sees people at night. He sees people in his room. At first we thought it was just a dream. But these episodes were increasing and when he started having falls we realised this can't go on."

Themiya's father Gunasena was diagnosed with dementia with Lewy bodies after he began to experience hallucinations and falls.

Dementia with Lewy bodies affects around 10-15 people out of every 100 people with dementia. Everyone’s experience of dementia symptoms can be different, but most people have changes to their thinking, memory and behaviour that start to get worse over time.

This type of dementia is caused by the build-up of a toxic protein called alpha-synuclein which forms clumps and disrupts the areas of our brain involved in processing information from our senses, thinking and movement. Symptoms can include:

- Changes in alertness and attention.
- Movement problems.
- Hallucinations, or seeing things that aren’t really there.
- Sleep problems, like acting out dreams.
