I’ve been listening to a collection of “riff tapes” that Alexi and I made whenever we had ideas for songs. Many of these riffs were used for Sinergy, some were never used at all and there are even some riffs on these cassettes that he ended up using for COB instead. Here’s a brief example of what I found on those tapes.

Listening back to the songs and riffs I wrote always makes me laugh or cringe depending on what sound I was using on my synth. I wrote the opening riff for Midnight Madness using an organ sound, as heard here with Alexi accompanying me on guitar. The finished product would of course be played exclusively on guitar and feature those signature, “Alexi guitar licks” at the end of the riff.

Those familiar with this Sinergy song might notice that the second riff played here by Alexi ended up being placed after the verse and chorus on the final recording, not after the opening riff as it is in this clip. Since we were multiple songwriters in Sinergy, we often times restructured the songs once we heard the riffs that the other band members had too. Not sure if this is interesting for any of you, but I enjoy listening to deconstructed songs in their rawest form.

Credit to my daughter for making this little slide show to go along with the audio. Thanks honey, mama loves you ❤️
